Summertime means more road trips, and more road trips mean more miles on your car. To keep your ride in tip top shape and avoid an inconvenient (and potentially expensive!) trip to the mechanic, do the following things every few months.
Change Your Oil and Filter
Oil serves many purposes in your vehicle: it lubricates the moving parts, helps act as a sealant against debris, cools the engine, reduces wear and tear, and helps prevent engine corrosion. Keeping it clean is really important for the overall health of your ride! Experts recommend changing your oil and filter every 3 months or 3,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
Keep an Eye on Coolant Levels
Before hitting the road, make sure your coolant levels aren’t too low! Low coolant levels can lead to engine problems and overheating – something you definitely don’t want. Being stuck on the side of the road with an overheated engine is not the best way to start or end a road trip!
Check Your Air Filter
Did you know that by ensuring that your air filter is flowing properly you can improve your fuel efficiency, decrease your emissions, and help ensure the life of your engine? It’s a good idea to check your air filter every so often to make sure it’s clear of debris. It’s easy to do this at home, so check your owner’s manual for instructions!
Rotate Your Tires (And Check the Air Pressure)
To keep your wheels turning, make sure to rotate your tires every so often! Rotating your tires extends their overall life and keeps tread wear even and balanced. It may even keep your ride quieter by reducing vibration from uneven tread! Having the right pressure in each tire is also important to making sure you have a smooth ride. Check your owner’s manual for the ideal tire pressure for your vehicle.
By doing these things every few months, you can keep your car in great shape for any trip. Get familiar with your owner’s manual and as always, schedule any services you aren’t comfortable doing yourself with a professional mechanic.
