In the early 1970s, a group of BASE jumpers and adrenaline junkies gathered in Fayetteville, West Virginia, drawn by the immense allure of the New River Gorge Bridge. At the time, this colossal steel arch bridge, spanning 3,030 feet, was the highest bridge in the world. They looked up at the towering structure and saw not just a bridge but an opportunity for adventure.
In 1978, Bridge Day became a reality. A small group of daredevils obtained permission to jump from the bridge, and thus, the event was born. It was a modest affair compared to the grand festivities of today, but it laid the foundation for what would become an internationally renowned event.
Bridge Day grew steadily over the years, attracting not only BASE jumpers but also other thrill-seekers like rappellers and highliners. As word spread about the event, it drew larger crowds, and the excitement surrounding Bridge Day continued to build.
In 1980, Bridge Day gained official recognition from the state of West Virginia.
