Buffalo Wild Wings GO Opens in Fairmont Area
Little General Stores, Inc. and Buffalo Wild Wings GO are excited to announce the official grand opening of the White Hall/Fairmont location.
In the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, where the New River Gorge carves through the rugged terrain of West Virginia, an extraordinary event has been taking place for over four decades. Every third Saturday in October, thrill-seekers, adventure enthusiasts, and curious spectators gather to witness a spectacle like no other – Bridge Day. Check out the history of this iconic West Virginian tradition below:
Bridge Day had humble beginnings. In the early 1970s, a group of BASE jumpers and adrenaline junkies gathered in Fayetteville, West Virginia, drawn by the immense allure of the New River Gorge Bridge. At the time, this colossal steel arch bridge, spanning 3,030 feet, was the highest bridge in the world. They looked up at the towering structure and saw not just a bridge but an opportunity for adventure.
In 1978, Bridge Day became a reality. A small group of daredevils obtained permission to jump from the bridge, and thus, the event was born. It was a modest affair compared to the grand festivities of today, but it laid the foundation for what would become an internationally renowned event.
Bridge Day grew steadily over the years, attracting not only BASE jumpers but also other thrill-seekers like rappellers and highliners. As word spread about the event, it drew larger crowds, and the excitement surrounding Bridge Day continued to build.
In 1980, Bridge Day gained official recognition from the state of West Virginia. The event organizers worked tirelessly to ensure safety measures were in place, including the mandatory BASE jumping equipment and the establishment of designated jump zones. These measures helped reduce accidents and establish Bridge Day as a relatively safe event for participants.
Bridge Day isn’t just about adrenaline-pumping stunts. It’s a day of celebration, where the entire community (and state!) comes together to embrace the unique spirit of West Virginia. Visitors can enjoy local food vendors, arts and crafts, live music, and a wide range of outdoor activities, including hiking and biking in the stunning New River Gorge area.
Today, Bridge Day continues to thrive as one of West Virginia’s most iconic traditions. Thousands of people from all over the world come to witness the daring feats of BASE jumpers and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere that surrounds the New River Gorge Bridge.
Bridge Day has transcended its humble beginnings to become a symbol of West Virginia’s adventurous spirit and love for community. It showcases the state’s natural beauty, highlights the courage of its participants, and brings people together in a celebration of life and adrenaline. As Bridge Day continues to evolve and grow, one thing remains constant: the timeless allure of the New River Gorge Bridge and the indomitable spirit of those who leap from its heights, leaving an indelible mark on West Virginia’s history.
