Take a journey to West Virginia to experience a road trip you’ll never forget! There’s no shortage of gorgeous places to explore, and some of the most scenic pit stops are tucked away in the mountains and wooded regions the state is known for. From breathtaking waterfalls to charming small towns, these pit stops will make your trip even more memorable.
First up, stop at Blackwater Falls State Park. Located in the Allegheny Mountains, this majestic spot features a stunning 63-foot waterfall as well as a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, biking, and fishing. Keep an eye out for the white-tailed deer and other wildlife that make the park their home. You’ll want to take your time admiring the views from all angles of the falls before you continue on your journey. (Stop by the Little General Store in Buckhannon to stock up on snacks for your adventures!)
Next, make a pit stop in Harpers Ferry. This historic town is known for its Civil War sites, but don’t let that be the only thing that draws your attention. Spend some time taking in the spectacular views from the Appalachian Trail overlook by the Shenandoah River, or take a stroll across the chain bridge to explore the quaint shops and restaurants. A visit to Harpers Ferry is guaranteed to add some adventure to your road trip!
From Harpers Ferry, it’s only a short trip to Berkeley Springs – a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. This small town is renowned for its natural hot springs, which were a popular destination for colonial Americans over three centuries ago. Today, Berkeley Springs is known for its historic architecture, unique attractions, and charming atmosphere. One of the most popular attractions in Berkeley Springs is the Berkeley Springs State Park, which is home to the modernized version of the Roman bathhouse that made the town famous over two hundred years ago. (Before you head over to Berkeley Springs and Harpers Ferry, stop by one of the Little General locations in Morgantown to fuel up!)
Last but not least, make a key pit stop at Monongahela National Forest. This national forest is home to hundreds of miles of trails and some of the best mountain biking in the state. Spend the day exploring the diverse terrain and taking in the breathtaking views of the Appalachian Mountains. (Marlinton is home to a Little General Store – you’ll want to load up on snacks and beverages before you head out to the forest!)
Don’t forget to grab a bite to eat at one of the restaurants or convenience stores scattered throughout the forest as well! So don’t wait any longer! Start packing for an unforgettable road trip through West Virginia. With the endless attractions and pit stops, you won’t be able to get enough. Happy adventures!
