West Virginia Waterfall Road Trips

The weather is warmer, the wildflowers are blooming – now is the time to hit the road for a spring roadtrip! Spring is the perfect time to travel our country roads and visit the notable waterfalls throughout the state. Check out some of our favorite waterfall stops below (and don’t forget to stop by your local Little General store for gas and snacks!)

Cathedral Falls

Cathedral Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in the state – and it has easy access right off Highway 60 near Gauley Bridge. Cane Creek falls over 60 feet over a rocky ledge of sandstone and shale. There is a parking lot right off the road and a short trail takes visitors right up to the falls.

Blackwater Falls

Located just in the heart of Tucker County, Blackwater Falls is a state park that is home to a 57-foot cascade. With a number of amazing overlooks, there are plenty of ways to experience the falls. Fun fact: Blackwater Falls is unique in color thanks to tannic acid of fallen hemlock and pine needles.

Sandstone Falls

As the largest waterfall on the New River, Sandstone Falls is located just outside of Hinton and is 1,500 feet wide (spanning the width of the river). As you drive down River Road, you’ll come across a day use area where you can park and explore the falls from the boardwalks and bridges. Be sure to stop at the visitor center at the Sandstone exit 139 on 1-64, too!

Campbell Falls and Mash Fork Falls

Both located within the Camp Creek State Forest in Mercer County, Campbell Falls and Mash Fork Falls are definitely worth the visit. A gravel road leads up to the falls, making it the perfect pitstop for adults and children of all ages!
