Each year as the leaves begin to fall, our home in the Mountain State reveals the brightest autumnal hues, showcased alongside our homes and highways. Soon, vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows will take over our forests, making scenic views here even more stunning. Our area is known for beautiful colors every fall season, and here are some of our favorite places to visit each year.
Blackwater Falls State Park is located in the Allegheny Mountains of Tucker County and is a great place to view autumn leaves! The park’s namesake is its cascading waterfall of amber waves tinted naturally by the falling hemlock and red spruce needles. Due to its high elevation where leaves change colors first, Blackwater Falls State Park is a must see for lovers of this autumn color palette. Swing by your local Little General on the way to grab supplies for your hike to the falls!

The Cass Scenic Railroad Historical Park offers a unique leaf peeping experience on its train ride to Bald Knob’s overlook, at 4,700 feet above sea level. With the train’s arrival at the lookout, take in the sweeping mountain view and enjoy the view from the third highest point in West Virginia. For leaf peepers and train enthusiasts alike, Cass Scenic Railroad Historical Park offers activities for travelers of all ages. Located in Pocahontas County, WV, Pipestem Resort State Park is a one-of-a-kind state park offering views of the Bluestone River Gorge. Breathtaking aerial views of the Bluestone are an armchair away, by visiting the Pipestem McKeever Lodge on the east rim of the Bluestone River Gorge. For those who prefer an up-close view, stay in the Mountain Creek Lodge down by the Bluestone River and marvel at the richest tones of autumn, by visiting in October.
