West Virginia is full of folklore. From the Flatwoods Monster of Braxton County, to the Mothman of Point Pleasant, there’s no shortage of stories about the unexplainable in our neck of the woods, especially when it comes to cryptids. But just how much do you know about our state’s rich cryptid history?
This month, we’ve rounded up a few of West Virginia’s cryptid-famous cities and the Little General Stores you can visit along your travels. With fresh, hot coffee to combat the wintry chill, fuel, or — appropriately — a Monster drink to keep the adrenaline flowing, our LG Stores have you covered. Grab a road trip buddy, and let’s get going!
The 1960s were a notable decade for West Virginia’s cryptids. Sightings of the Grafton Monster were reported by residents throughout the community, including Robert Cockrell, a local journalist, who came across a strange and large, sleek white figure while he was driving home. Though searches were conducted, no such creature was ever found.
Over the years, the phenomenon has only gained popularity. Today, you can visit a sign downtown that showcases the city’s beloved cryptid Fun fact: The Grafton Monster was also featured in the Fallout 76 game! See the sign for yourself at 36 W Main St in Grafton, WV!

The glowing-eyed creature was allegedly discovered in the 1950s by three young boys in Flatwoods, West Virginia. After witnessing a streak of light and an accompanying crash, the boys and some relatives stumbled upon a tall, hissing creature with a red spade-shaped head. The Flatwoods Monster has since become one of West Virginia’s most famous folklore figures.
You can learn all about the Flatwoods Monster by visiting the museum at 208 Main Street in Sutton, WV.

The Mothman is a mysterious half-man, half-bird-like hybrid first sighted in Point Pleasant, West Virginia in the 1960s. Multiple sightings of the mysterious creature were reported shortly before the collapse of the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant, which claimed the lives of more than three dozen people. Due to the timing of the events, the Mothman is often considered to be an omen or forewarning of a disaster.
Over the years, the Mothman’s legacy has grown from an obscure Appalachian mystery to a pop culture icon. Today, you can visit the Mothman statue and museum downtown at 201 4th St. in Point Pleasant, WV.
