LG Stores awards 20 scholarships to students across West Virginia

For more than 20 years, Little General Stores has awarded scholarships to students across the Mountain State in an effort to support their educational endeavors. This year, 20 high school seniors from 20 different high schools have been selected to receive a one-time $1,000 award to assist students as they enter the workforce or pursue continued studies at universities, technical colleges, and certification programs.

Jack Ernstes, from University High School in Morgantown, said he’ll be using the scholarship to cover equipment needed for his studies in computer science.

“I was so surprised when I got the notification in the mail that I was getting a scholarship,” Ernstes said. “It made me really happy.”

Ernstes said the scholarship will help with the costs of purchasing a laptop and enable him to learn more about his field. He eventually hopes to pursue a career in artificial intelligence.

“I would want the scholarship committee to know that I am a hard worker and I will stay motivated to do well in my classes,” Ernstes said in gratitude. “I would also want them to know that I will pay it forward someday.”

Presley Marie Damron, from Logan High School, said she was “very thankful and honored” to be named one of this year’s scholarship recipients.

“I plan to attend Southern WV Community and Technical College and receive my associate’s degree then transfer to a university and get my bachelor’s degree in elementary education and specialize in special education,” Damron said.

Damron said she plans to use the scholarship to cover tuition and textbooks. Having this support, she added, will also allow her to work fewer hours and focus on her education.

“I was honored and proud to receive the scholarship,” Damron said. “It will help me fulfill my dream of becoming an elementary teacher.”

James Green, of River View High School, was ecstatic after learning he had been selected as one of this year’s recipients.

“I am so grateful for this scholarship,” Green said, expressing his sincere gratitude to the selection committee. “Money struggles can be a big deal and weigh heavy on the mind of a person. Especially a student. I am very hardworking and will never let anything deter me from accomplishing a goal that I have or want to achieve. I can assure you that this scholarship will be used for school purposes and will help me in the end become successful a bit easier than what it would’ve been. I don’t have words to say how thankful I am.”

Green will be the first in his family to attend college, and he plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a focus in marketing. Simultaneously, he plans to chase his entrepreneurial dreams of starting a business.

“[I will be] taking my knowledge to help my community economically, promoting our area, bringing back jobs,” Green said. “Over the course of college, I plan to start and promote a hunting company which is a side dream that I have already started putting into action.”

Amberlie Wilson, a senior from Greenbrier West High School, said learning she had been selected as a recipient was “a huge surprise.”

“I know a lot of students not only in my school applied for this scholarship but all around the state as well,” Wilson said. “It was a good feeling knowing that to the scholarship committee I was deserving of their monetary support.”

Wilson will be studying accounting and eventually aspires to open her own accounting firm after earning her master’s in accounting. She also has her sights on founding a nonprofit near her home county.

“Aside from my career, one day I would like to be able to start a nonprofit in southern West Virginia that rescues abandoned cats,” Wilson said.

Wilson is not the first in her family to pursue higher education, but she will be the first to earn a bachelor’s degree after she completes her undergraduate studies. Thanks to the LG Stores Scholarship, Wilson can live on campus and work on saving for the future. She’ll be using the scholarship to cover her housing.

“Fortunately, as a PROMISE recipient and a Health Science Technology Academy (HSTA) student, my tuition for my undergraduate studies is paid for as long as I keep my GPA up,” Wilson said. “So, this scholarship will be used to help pay for the room and board costs that come with staying on a college campus as a freshman.”
