Leaf Peeping in West Virginia

Autumn is here, and fall colors are popping out across Appalachia! Vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows are taking over, making scenic views here even more stunning. Our area is known for beautiful colors every fall season, and here are some of our favorite places to visit each year to see the exquisite hues.

Coopers Rock State Forest

Coopers Rock State Forest is located north of Morgantown in Bruceton Mills and is a great place to view autumn leaves! The main overlook is picture perfect, but trust us – you’ll want to take a hike out to Raven Rock. Sweeping views of the Cheat River Gorge and 50 miles of hiking trails make it one of the best places to view the fall colors. Swing by your local Little General on the way to grab supplies for a picnic!

New River Gorge

From Grandview to the New River Gorge bridge, this area managed by the National Park Service is the perfect place to view the fall colors! Stop by the Grandview overlook, then drive north to Fayetteville to the Canyon Rim Visitor Center and walk the boardwalk to the bridge overlook. If you like hiking, be sure to visit the Endless Wall or Long Point trails to take in the colors from the woods. Don’t forget to make a stop in Fayetteville – voted one of America’s Coolest Small Towns!

Hatfield-McCoy Trails

Mix your leaf peeping with a little adventure! These off-road trails that snake their way through the mountains of southern West Virginia are an adrenaline lover’s dream. There are over 700 miles of trails to choose from, so whether you’re looking for sweeping mountain views or tight trails that twist through the forest, you’ll find the perfect place to view the autumn colors. Many trails also connect to ATV friendly towns where you can find a Little General Store ready to serve you!

Highland Scenic Highway

Hop in the car, let’s go for a ride! This scenic route stretches 43 miles from Richwood to Marlinton and has several scenic overlooks that are the perfect place to stop for a picnic. This highway winds its way through part of the Monongahela National Forest. Plan to swing by the Cranberry Nature Center, Falls of Hills Creek, or Cranberry Glades on this trip, too! Make sure to gas up at a Little General Store on the way.
