5 Great Trout Fishing Spots in West Virginia

1. Williams River

If you’re a traditional trout angler and you’re looking for an old fashioned outdoor challenge, the Williams River is a great place to provide that. Spawning about 20 miles of stocked water, the Williams River offers a great day of fishing. For sport fisherman, there are designated catch and release areas. The very accessible waterway makes Willams River a very appealing fishing location. 2. Shavers Fork River

Shavers Fork is a great spot for rainbow trout enthusiasts! With 50 miles of stocked waterway starting in Spruce Knob, Shavers Fork has quite a lot of fishing to offer. Like most trout streams in WV, Shavers Fork has general harvesting areas as well as designated catch and release areas to accommodate both types of fishermen. The general fishing spot on Shavers Fork is easy to access from the road. Spruce Knob and the surrounding areas are some of the most beautiful places in the state. Anglers have quite the outdoor treat awaiting when casting a line into Shavers Fork!

3. North Fork River

If you’re fishing for rainbow, golden rainbow, brown or brook trout, the North Fork River has them all! The North Fork River is also in close proximity to Spruce Knob, which makes it another ideal spot for a beautifully scenic experience while fishing. Trout are transported by train each year and used to stock the North Fork.

4. Pipestem Resort State Park

A ten minute drive north of Concord University, on the border of Summers and Mercer County is Pipestem Resort State Park. The park has a public fishing lake in it that is stocked with trout as well as several other breeds of fish. The lake, being in a state park, makes for a very convenient experience. With readily accessible bathrooms, parking and other amenities, Pipestem offers anglers a very easy and fun fishing trip!

5. Greenbrier River

2019 brought anglers a brand new fishing location in the Greenbrier River. This year is the first year the river has been stocked with fish. It now has a healthy supply of rainbow, golden rainbow, brown and brook trout to fish for! The stocked sections begin at the Cass Scenic Railroad and follow the rail trail for several miles down the river. There are also several locations only accessible on mountain bike or by foot giving fishermen looking for a more traditional outdoors fishing experience something to really enjoy as well!
