History of the Hatfield & McCoy Trails

Trail Riding in the West Virginia Hills

If you’re like me, you’re no stranger to the roar of a group of ATVs going down the road. Don’t mind them, they’re getting gas (at their nearest Little General of course) to head to the next trailhead. There’s no doubt that the Hatfield and McCoy Trails have brought so much to our state with tourism. We love showing off our wonderful hills, and sharing the wild and wonderful with others.

The Hatfield and McCoy trail system opened in October of 2000 with 300 miles of trail operations.

Of course, the name comes from the two families whose notorious feud is the spark of many West Virginian conversations. Whenever you think Hatfield & McCoy, you always think of southern West Virginia, and that’s what the trails are mostly located.

Now, the trails spread over 600 miles. They are also open year-round, so you can experience the trails at any time. As your ride on these trails, you ride in the mountains and see the sights and wildlife that make our state beautiful.

There are 7 trail systems in total- their trailhead locations are:

Bearwallow | Ethel, WV
Buffalo Mountain | Williamson, WV
Indian Ridge | Ashland, WV
Devil Anse | Matewan, WV
Pinnacle Creek | Pineville, WV
Rock House | Man, WV
Pocahontas | Bramwell, WV

Each trail has their own difficulty and allow certain off-road vehicles. You can check out all the details of each trailhead at the Hatfield and McCoy Trails Website https://trailsheaven.com/. There, you can learn much more about the trails in their brochure and even find lodging for your next adventure. They even have rentals at some sites, too, so you don’t even have to bring your own!
